How big is 1 ton of pea gravel?
Each ton covers approximately 60 square feet at 4" deep, 80 square feet at 3" deep, or 120 square feet at 2" deep. Pea Gravel does not compact so you do not need to account for a compaction ratio.
A ton of gravel will cover approximately 100 square feet, 2 inches deep.
Project type | Recommended depth | Cubic yards of pea gravel |
---|---|---|
Pathway (30′ x 4′) | 2 inches | 0.74 |
Driveway (20′ x 24′) | 6 inches | 8.89 |
Patio (10′ x 10′) | 6 inches | 1.85 |
Flower bed (8′ x 5′) | 3 inches | 4.44 |
To manually calculate how much gravel you need, measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area in feet, then multiply those numbers to determine cubic feet. Next, divide your cubic feet value by 27 to determine cubic yards. Finally, to convert cubic yards to tons, multiply by 1.4.
A dump truck can typically hold between 12-20 tons of gravel, depending on the size of the truck. It is also important to factor in the weight of the material when calculating how much gravel a dump truck can carry. For example, 8-10 yards of gravel equates to around 0.66 tons.
How deep should pea gravel layers be? — Typically, each layer of gravel should be between 2 and 2.5 inches.
Using 2 inches for the depth, the following measurements are a guide to the amount of gravel coverage per ton: 1/4 to 1/2 inch gravel, 100 square feet per ton; 1/2 to 1 inch gravel, 90 square feet per ton; and 1 1/2 to 2 inches gravel, 80 square feet per ton.
What Do You Put Under Pea Gravel? Landscaping fabric and sand or crushed rock (or both) are the most common. You can also use a honeycomb grid for extra stability.
The two most effective methods for stabilizing pea gravel are cement and permeable pavers. If you're stabilizing pea gravel with cement, it will hold for a while until it's eventually damaged by traffic and water exposure.
There are 54 50lb bags of stone or sand per cubic yard. 27 cubic feet equal 1 cubic yard (3'L x 3'W x 3'H).
How many wheelbarrows in a ton of pea gravel?
For most materials, you would need around 20-25 wheelbarrows to make up one ton of gravel.
We know that 1 cubic yard of pea gravel covers about 324 square feet at a depth of 1 inch. Divide that 324 by your desired depth of gravel in inches to figure out how many square feet you can cover with 1 cubic yard of pea gravel for your project.

Full-size Pickup Trucks: Can usually handle 2 cubic yards of soil, 2-3 cubic yards of mulch, and 1 cubic yard of stone or gravel.
A bed of 4" or more of crushed/screened 3/4 minus gravel or other porous gravel is required for all sheds over 8' wide. Gravel base is to be 2 feet larger than the shed size. Example: 10x12 shed requires 12x14 base (see diagram below).
A yard of any material will cover approximately 100 square feet at 3 inches of depth.
Pea gravel is the cheapest landscaping rock available. It can be used for a wide variety of landscaping projects, including driveways.
But first, we have to convert tons into yards to figure out how much gravel, or how many tons, we actually need. The way we change tons of gravel into yards in the building industry is by multiplying tons by 0.714. For example, 1 ton of gravel = 0.714 yards of gravel.
Pea gravel is a popular material because it is inexpensive and comes in a variety of colors and sizes. It's composed of rounded pebbles, so it is comfortable for pets or bare feet to walk across.
A good landscape fabric beneath a layer of pebbles or gravel goes a long way in preventing weed seed germination. Even the best landscape fabric won't stop 100% of the weeds. Some seeds will inevitably germinate and sprout, however having a weed block barrier will keep the roots from getting a foothold in the soil.
Pea gravel that is directly on topsoil can lead to weed growth, tripping hazards, and an unsightly garden.
What are the disadvantages of pea gravel?
A pea gravel patio is inexpensive, easy to install, and simple to maintain! With that said, there are a few drawbacks, including the propensity for the rocks to scatter, the possibility of weeds (if you don't install it properly), and concerns with furniture sinking.
How do you install pea gravel? Compared to other hardscaping materials, installing pea gravel is relatively easy. Generally, you work the soil about 6 inches deep, remove any weeds, lay down 2 inches of coarsely textured base rock (also called crushed rock), and cover that with a 3-inch-deep layer of pea gravel.
This attractive gravel is a quartz aggregate in a semi rounded shape, ranging from 6-25mm. It's best laid 4-5cm deep. Pea Gravel is also available in 10-14mm.
Don't Place Pea Gravel Right on Soil
If you are using the pea gravel as an alternative to mulch or to create a pathway in your yard, it should never be put directly on top of soil. Before adding pea gravel to your landscape, apply a layer of landscaping fabric to the soil.
The benefit of using landscape gravel is that it doesn't attract pests. Some bugs like to hide out under the rocks, but if they don't have a food source, they aren't going to stick around.
The gravel, being so movable, needs an edge to contain it. Galvanized steel is a durable and traditional choice and also malleable enough for curves. But you can also use pressure-treated wood, cedar, bricks, cobblestones, or even plastic edging.
Pea gravel is one of the best materials for landscape drainage because its small size allows for outstanding drainage. These rocks are only about ¾ inches in size.
A: Each 50-pound bag of QUIKRETE® Gravel will yield approximately 0.5 cubic feet. For 220 square feet at 1” thick, you will need 18-1/3 cubic feet or 37 50-pound bags. Yields will vary with waste, uneven subgrade, etc.
50 Lb. 0.5 cubic foot bag premium pea gravel (weighs approximately 50 pounds).
Will grass grow through pea gravel?
Pea gravel is a relatively maintenance-free landscaping material. When placed on the ground, however, weeds and grasses will eventually poke through.
Alternatively, 1 bulk bag will cover approximately 16 sqm at 30mm depth.
A driveway should be at least 50mm deep, so one ton would cover approximately 14 square meters. If you are in any doubt, use our gravel calculator for an accurate quotation that also includes accurate shipping costs.
The number of cubic yards in a ton of gravel = 2000/ 3000 = 0.66 cubic yards. Hence, there are 0.714 cubic yards in 1 ton of gravel.
Dump trucks can usually carry about 10 to 14 cubic yards of dirt. To understand what a cubic yard looks like, it's easiest to think of one as a block of material around 3 feet in length, height, and width. One cubic yard is the equivalent of 27 cubic feet.
Medium-sized gravel is ideal for paths or driveways. The stones need to be comfortable to walk on with minimal movement. Choose angular gravel that won't displace easily. 10mm or 14mm gravel is the most suitable for paths.
The following measurements are a general guide to the amount of gravel coverage per cubic yard 1 cubic yard = 3” depth for 100 square feet. If you're still not sure or want to get the most accurate measurement possible, you can opt to use a gravel calculator.
A driveway should be at least 50mm deep, so one ton would cover approximately 14 square meters.
How deep should gravel be? If you are using a 10mm gravel aggregate, lay this at a depth of 30-40mm. However, if you are using this for the purpose of a driveway, this should be laid at least 50mm deep. When using a 20mm aggregate, this should be laid at least 40-50mm deep, and at least 50-60mm on driveways.
How do you keep pea gravel in place?
The two most effective methods for stabilizing pea gravel are cement and permeable pavers. If you're stabilizing pea gravel with cement, it will hold for a while until it's eventually damaged by traffic and water exposure.
